PAAOHN President's Message
Saturday, October 27, 2018
Thank you very much to all of our members for your attendance and support of our conference during the past year. Many of you have attended conferences around the state and volunteered to assist wherever needed. The members of the Board sincerely hope the information has been helpful to you in your OHN Practice.
The landscape of Occupational Health is changing. Corporate mergers, downsizing, and financial restrictions have forced us to be creative in the way we manage our departments, deliver care and work to support AAOHN.
Most of you who regularly attend conferences, can see that attendance has been lower, and that is a sign of a greater problem. We need your input on how to keep our State Chapter viable and pertinent to your practice.
We need your help and your voice on our Board! It is imperative that we obtain new people with a fresh perspective so that we can plan for our future. Our current Board is filled with dedicated nurses who will help you learn, and we value our limited time. We help all new Board members learn the ropes and partner with you to collaborate on projects that promote our state organization.
Please consider joining the Board! We welcome your new ideas and passion for occupational health! If you have an interest, please contact one of the Board Members and we will discuss with you how to get started.
We hope that we have inspired you to join us! We need to introduce a major change in the AAOHN Membership Structure that will require your VOTE. The AAOHN Chapter Challenges Taskforce reviewed all of your comments this year (after the National Conference) and made the following recommendation to the Board.
- Dues are proposed to be lowered to $165/year – a net $20.00 annual savings.
- The STATE and Individual Chapter membership mandate will be abolished.
- This means that AAOHN members are NO LONGER REQUIRED to join the local state and/or local organizations
Our state and local organizations depend on your dues, which are currently:
- State - $10.00
- Southwest - $20.
- Susquehanna - $10.00
- Berks - $10.00
- Central - $10.00
We need to prove our viability to all members in order to remain a functional chapter. If we are unable to sustain as a functional chapter, the state and local chapters will be in jeopardy – meaning, we will not have the resources to provide the educational events and conferences that many of you rely on to earn CEUs and enjoy to network with your peers.
The above structure change proposal is driven by AAOHN’s outreach to membership this past year. If you are not happy with the proposed change and DID NOT RESPOND, I urge you to make your voice heard when future calls for input are requested.
The recommendation above will come out for a vote to the AAOHN membership in the near future. Please VOTE to remain members of your local and state organizations. If you feel the Board is not providing the value you seek in the organization, please volunteer and help us grow to meet your needs.
If you have any questions, please contact any Board Member – either on the state or local level! We welcome your input and ideas!
I would like to proudly announce that two of our members are on the AAOHN National Ballot:
Kim Olszewski has been nominated for President Elect. Kim is currently the Secretary for AAOHN. She is very active and is a dominant force for occupational health nurses. She will make an excellent President for our organization.
Yolanda Lang has been nominated for the position of AAOHN Secretary. Yolanda is a past President of SWAOHN as well as the Past President of PAAOHN and a North East Regional Director. She currently manages the NEAOHN News Letter, which is one of the first regional updates in our organization.
Both Kim and Yolande deserve your VOTES! For many years, both Kim and Yolanda have served AAOHN and PA and local chapters well!
Remember that along with the voting on the leadership of the organization, you will be asked to VOTE on the Membership Bylaws Change as well. Please support our local nurses, because EVERY VOTE counts!
I have included complete details of the Optional Chapter Structure as well as the Full 2019 Bylaw Rationale Document as attachments on this page. They can be found on the AAOHN.org site as well.
